3D Nerve Map of the Body: Find the Nerve Behind Tingling, Burning and Numbness
Most tingling, burning and numbness comes from a nerve being pressed, irritated or damaged, and where you feel it often points to the nerve most likely involved. Thumb to ring finger points to the median nerve, a stripe down one leg to a pinched root in the lower back, and both feet evenly to a whole-body neuropathy such as diabetes. Use the 3D map to see each nerve, or describe what you feel in the symptom checker.
27 sensation types · 22 nerves · 30 nerve patterns
Types of body sensations: common, medical and unusual
Abnormal body sensations fall into three groups. Common ones such as tingling, numbness and burning come from irritated or compressed nerves. Medical terms such as paresthesia, dysesthesia and allodynia describe how the sensation behaves. Unusual ones, like a wet or trickling feeling or a shock down the spine, often point to a specific nerve or to the spinal cord.

Nerve map vs dermatome map: how to tell which nerve is causing it
Doctors localise a sensory problem by its shape on the skin. There are four main patterns, and the symptom checker uses the same logic.
One nerve's patch (peripheral nerve map): a compressed nerve
Symptoms stay inside the territory of a single named nerve, such as the thumb to ring finger for the median nerve or the outer thigh for the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. This is called a mononeuropathy and usually means the nerve is squeezed at one spot, like the carpal tunnel.
A stripe (dermatome map): a pinched nerve root
Symptoms follow a dermatome, a strip of skin running from the spine down a limb or around the trunk, often with neck or back pain. This is a radiculopathy, most often from a disc. C6 reaches the thumb, C8 the little finger, L5 the top of the foot and S1 the sole.
Both feet, then hands: whole-body neuropathy
Symptoms start in the toes of both feet evenly, creep up the legs and reach the fingertips once they pass mid shin: the glove and stocking pattern. The longest nerves fail first, so diabetes, B12 deficiency, alcohol and some medicines are the usual causes.
One whole side, or scattered areas: brain or spinal cord
Symptoms on one entire side of the body, a band around the trunk, a shock down the spine when bending the neck, or patches that come and go in different places suggest the brain or spinal cord. Sudden one-sided symptoms are an emergency.

Two maps, two questions
A dermatome map answers "which spinal root?". Each colour is one root, so symptoms that follow a stripe point to the neck or lower back.
A nerve territory map answers "which nerve?". A patch that fits one coloured territory, such as the thumb side of the palm, points to that nerve being pressed further along its path.
Borders overlap by a few centimetres between people, so doctors judge the overall shape, not the exact edge.
Check your symptoms with the nerve symptom checker
Answer five short steps on the nerve symptom checker: tap where you feel it on a body map, describe the sensation and when it happens. The checker checks 30 common nerve patterns, from carpal tunnel and sciatica to meralgia paresthetica and peripheral neuropathy, and you can then open your result here in 3D with your areas lit up.
Start the symptom checkerThe checker checks for emergency warning signs first. It is an educational tool and does not diagnose.
22 sensory nerves on the nerve map
What each nerve supplies, how irritation feels, the common causes and the warning signs.
Brain
The brain does not feel sensation itself. It reads it. Every tingle, burn or numb patch you notice is a signal sent up a nerve and the spinal cord to a strip of brain that runs over the top of the head from ear to ear.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Receives touch, temperature, pain, vibration and position signals from the whole body. Each body part has its own patch of cortex; the hands, lips and tongue get the largest share, which is why sensations there feel so sharp.
- How irritation feels
- When the problem is in the brain rather than a nerve, symptoms usually follow a pattern a single nerve cannot explain: one whole side of the body, face plus arm plus leg on the same side, or a patch that spreads over minutes (as in migraine aura).
- Common causes
- Migraine aura: tingling that marches from fingers up the arm to the face over 5 to 30 minutes; Anxiety and hyperventilation: tingling around the mouth and in both hands; Multiple sclerosis: patches of numbness or tingling lasting days; Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or stroke; Hypnic jerks and "exploding head" sensations as you fall asleep
- Warning signs
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg on one side; Trouble speaking, confusion, or loss of vision; Worst headache of your life; Symptoms that start within seconds rather than spreading slowly: call emergency services

Spinal cord
A cable of nerve tissue about the thickness of your little finger, running inside the spinal canal. It carries sensory signals up to the brain and movement commands down to the body. Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves branch off it, one pair at each level.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Every part of the body below the face. Each spinal level supplies a stripe of skin called a dermatome: C6 the thumb, C8 the little finger, T4 the nipple line, T10 the belly button, L4 the inner shin, L5 the top of the foot, S1 the sole and outer foot.
- How irritation feels
- A pinched nerve root causes tingling, burning or numbness in one dermatome stripe, often with shooting pain. Pressure on the cord itself causes symptoms in both arms or both legs, a band-like feeling around the trunk, or an electric shock down the spine when you bend your neck (Lhermitte sign).
- Common causes
- Herniated (slipped) disc pressing on a nerve root; Spinal stenosis: narrowing of the canal with age; Cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis); Multiple sclerosis lesions in the cord; Vitamin B12 deficiency affecting the cord's sensory columns
- Warning signs
- Numbness or weakness in both legs; New trouble controlling bladder or bowel; Numbness between the legs (saddle area); Symptoms after a fall or accident

Cauda equina
Latin for "horse's tail". The spinal cord ends around the first lumbar vertebra; below that, the lower nerve roots hang down the canal like strands of hair before exiting to the legs, bladder, bowel and genitals.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- The legs, feet, buttocks, genitals, bladder and bowel: through the lumbar and sacral nerve roots.
- How irritation feels
- Irritation of a single root gives sciatica-type burning or tingling down one leg. Compression of the whole bundle causes numbness in the "saddle" area, both legs, and changes in bladder or bowel control.
- Common causes
- Large central disc herniation; Severe lumbar spinal stenosis; Tumour or infection in the lower spine (rare); Complication after spinal surgery or injury
- Warning signs
- Cauda equina syndrome is a surgical emergency: numbness around the genitals or back passage, new difficulty passing urine, loss of bowel control, or weakness in both legs. Go to emergency the same day

Trigeminal nerve
The fifth cranial nerve and the main sensory nerve of the face. It splits into three branches: ophthalmic (forehead, eye, top of nose), maxillary (cheek, upper lip, upper teeth) and mandibular (jaw, lower lip, chin, lower teeth, front two-thirds of the tongue).
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Skin of the face, the eyes, inside of the nose and mouth, teeth, gums and the jaw muscles used for chewing.
- How irritation feels
- Tingling or numbness in one branch zone of the face; burning of the tongue, lips or mouth; or brief, lightning-like electric stabs set off by touching the face, chewing or brushing teeth (trigeminal neuralgia).
- Common causes
- Trigeminal neuralgia: a blood vessel pressing on the nerve root; Dental work, wisdom-tooth extraction or local anaesthetic; Shingles in the ophthalmic branch; Burning mouth syndrome; Multiple sclerosis; Anxiety-related tingling around the lips
- Warning signs
- Numbness of the face with weakness, slurred speech or double vision; Shingles rash near the eye: needs same-day eye assessment; Numb chin with no dental cause (numb chin syndrome can signal serious disease)

Facial nerve
The seventh cranial nerve. It is mainly a movement nerve for the muscles of facial expression, but also carries taste from the front of the tongue and a small patch of sensation around the ear.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Muscles that raise the eyebrows, close the eyes, smile and pucker; taste on the front two-thirds of the tongue; tear and saliva glands.
- How irritation feels
- When the facial nerve is affected, people often describe their face as "numb" even though skin sensation is normal. What they notice is heaviness, drooping and a dull feeling around the ear, with altered taste.
- Common causes
- Bell's palsy (usually viral inflammation); Ramsay Hunt syndrome (shingles of the ear); Lyme disease; Parotid gland tumours (rare)
- Warning signs
- Facial droop with arm or leg weakness or slurred speech: suspect stroke and call emergency services; Forehead is spared (you can still raise the eyebrow on the weak side): points to stroke rather than Bell's palsy

Glossopharyngeal nerve
The ninth cranial nerve. It carries sensation from the back of the tongue, the tonsils and the upper throat, and triggers the gag reflex.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Back third of the tongue (touch and taste), tonsils, upper pharynx, middle ear; sensors in the carotid artery that monitor blood pressure.
- How irritation feels
- A lump-in-the-throat feeling, burning or raw throat, or sharp pain on swallowing that can shoot into the ear.
- Common causes
- Acid reflux reaching the throat (laryngopharyngeal reflux); Throat muscle tension from stress; Post-viral throat hypersensitivity; Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (rare)
- Warning signs
- Difficulty swallowing food (not just the sensation); Weight loss, a neck lump, or voice change lasting more than 3 weeks
- Read more

Vagus nerve
The longest cranial nerve. "Vagus" means wandering. It travels from the brainstem down the neck beside the carotid artery, through the chest and into the abdomen, carrying most of the body's "rest and digest" signals.
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Throat and voice box, heart, lungs, oesophagus, stomach and most of the intestines. Around 80% of its fibres carry information from the organs up to the brain.
- How irritation feels
- Organ sensations are vague and hard to pinpoint: a lump in the throat, a burning or fluttering chest, a pulsing or burning stomach, nausea, or a wave of heat before fainting.
- Common causes
- Acid reflux irritating the oesophagus; Anxiety and panic (strong vagal and sympathetic activity); Globus sensation; Gastritis and functional dyspepsia; Vasovagal reactions (fainting with pain, blood, standing long)
- Warning signs
- Chest pain or pressure spreading to the arm, jaw or back, with sweating or breathlessness: call emergency services; Vomiting blood or black stools; Difficulty swallowing that is getting worse

Cervical plexus
A network formed by the top four neck nerves. Its skin branches (lesser occipital, great auricular, transverse cervical and supraclavicular nerves) fan out from behind the middle of the neck muscle (sternocleidomastoid).
What it supplies, causes and warning signs
- Supplies
- Skin at the back of the head behind the ear, the ear lobe, the front and sides of the neck, and the top of the shoulder and upper chest to just below the collarbone. The C3 to C5 phrenic nerve from this plexus drives the diaphragm.
- How irritation feels
- Tingling or burning at the back of the head or behind the ear, scalp tenderness, neck skin that feels sunburnt, or pain referred to the top of the shoulder.
- Common causes
- Neck muscle tension and poor posture; Occipital neuralgia; Cervical spondylosis; Whiplash
- Warning signs
- Neck pain with fever and stiffness, or with a severe sudden headache; Symptoms after trauma to the neck

Nerve map by region: face, arms, hands, legs and feet
Pick the part of the body where you feel it to see which nerves supply that skin, the usual causes and when to get help.
Head & Scalp
Scalp sensations come from two sources: the trigeminal nerve at the front of the head and the upper neck nerves (C2 to C3) at the back. Tingling that moves, spreads or affects both the head and one side of the body points to the brain; tingling in a fixed patch points to a nerve.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Brain, Trigeminal nerve, Cervical plexus
- Common causes
- Tension-type headache and scalp muscle tightness; Occipital neuralgia; Anxiety and hyperventilation; Migraine aura; Allodynia (light touch feels painful): hair brushing hurts during migraine
- Seek urgent care if
- Sudden severe headache; Tingling with weakness, speech or vision change
Face, Mouth & Jaw
Almost all facial feeling is carried by the trigeminal nerve in three branches. Map which branch zone is affected (forehead, cheek or jaw) and the likely cause narrows quickly.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Trigeminal nerve, Facial nerve
- Common causes
- Dental procedures and local anaesthetic; Trigeminal neuralgia; Burning mouth syndrome; Anxiety tingling around the lips; Shingles; Dry eye and screen strain for burning eyes
- Seek urgent care if
- Face numbness with arm/leg weakness, slurred speech: call emergency services; Shingles rash on the forehead or nose tip
Neck & Throat
The throat is supplied by the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves, which is why throat sensations are vague: a lump, tightness, burning or rawness that is hard to point to. The skin of the neck is supplied by the cervical plexus.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Vagus nerve, Glossopharyngeal nerve, Cervical plexus
- Common causes
- Acid reflux reaching the throat; Globus sensation; Anxiety and muscle tension; Post-nasal drip; Thyroid swelling
- Seek urgent care if
- Real difficulty swallowing food; Neck lump, weight loss or hoarse voice for over 3 weeks
Chest
Chest skin and wall are supplied by the intercostal nerves in horizontal bands; the heart, lungs and oesophagus signal through the vagus and sympathetic nerves. A burning band that follows a rib is usually nerve; a diffuse pressure behind the breastbone needs a heart check.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Intercostal nerves, Vagus nerve
- Common causes
- Acid reflux and oesophagitis; Costochondritis; Shingles; Anxiety and panic; Intercostal neuralgia
- Seek urgent care if
- Chest pressure or pain with sweating, breathlessness, or pain spreading to arm/jaw: call emergency services
Shoulders & Arms
Everything from the shoulder to the fingertips runs through the brachial plexus. Symptoms along the whole arm suggest the neck or plexus; symptoms in one part of the hand suggest a single nerve lower down.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Brachial plexus, Radial nerve, Cervical plexus
- Common causes
- Neck nerve root compression; Thoracic outlet syndrome; Sleeping on the arm; Rotator cuff problems referring pain; Heavy bag straps
- Seek urgent care if
- Left arm symptoms with chest pressure; Sudden arm weakness
Hands & Fingers
Which fingers tingle usually points to the nerve involved: thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger (palm side) = median; little and half the ring finger = ulnar; back of thumb and hand = radial. Tingling in both hands is most often carpal tunnel on both sides. If both feet are also affected, a whole-body cause such as diabetes or low B12 is more likely.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Median nerve, Ulnar nerve, Radial nerve
- Common causes
- Carpal tunnel syndrome; Cubital tunnel syndrome; Neck nerve root compression; Raynaud's and cold; Peripheral neuropathy; Capsaicin (chili) burns
- Seek urgent care if
- Wasting of hand muscles; Sudden one-sided hand weakness or clumsiness
Abdomen & Stomach
The abdominal wall is supplied by the lower intercostal nerves (T7 to T12); the stomach and bowel signal through the vagus. Skin-level burning in a band points to the nerves; deep burning linked to meals points to the gut.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Intercostal nerves, Vagus nerve
- Common causes
- Gastritis and reflux; Functional dyspepsia; Shingles on the trunk; Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment (ACNES); Aortic pulsation in slim people
- Seek urgent care if
- Vomiting blood or black stools; Sudden severe belly or back pain with a pulsing lump: call emergency services
Pelvis & Urinary
Burning in the bladder, urethra, genitals or back passage is carried by the pudendal nerve and pelvic splanchnic nerves (S2 to S4). Most urinary burning is infection, not nerve damage, but constant burning with a normal urine test deserves a nerve review.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Pudendal nerve, Lumbar plexus, Cauda equina
- Common causes
- Urinary tract infection; Sexually transmitted infection; Interstitial cystitis / bladder pain syndrome; Pudendal neuralgia; Prostatitis; Anal fissure
- Seek urgent care if
- Saddle numbness with bladder or bowel change: emergency; Fever, back pain and burning urination: possible kidney infection
Thighs & Upper Legs
Front of thigh: femoral nerve. Outer thigh: lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Back of thigh: sciatic nerve and posterior femoral cutaneous nerve. A burning patch on the outer thigh with no weakness is very often meralgia paresthetica.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Femoral nerve, Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, Sciatic nerve, Lumbar plexus
- Common causes
- Meralgia paresthetica; Sciatica; Femoral neuropathy (diabetes); Hip arthritis referring pain; Vascular problems
- Seek urgent care if
- Leg weakness or knee buckling; A hot, swollen, painful calf or thigh: rule out blood clot
Lower Legs
The shin and top of the foot belong to the peroneal nerve, the calf and sole to the tibial nerve, and the inner shin to the saphenous branch of the femoral nerve. Burning that climbs from both feet to both shins in a "stocking" pattern points to a neuropathy that starts in the longest nerves.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Tibial nerve, Common peroneal nerve, Sciatic nerve, Femoral nerve
- Common causes
- Peripheral neuropathy; Sciatica (L5, S1); Restless legs syndrome; Crossing legs (peroneal compression); Venous insufficiency
- Seek urgent care if
- Foot drop; Calf swelling, heat and pain
Feet & Toes
The feet are the most common place for neuropathy to begin, because the nerves supplying them are the longest in the body. Burning, tingling or numb soles are often the first sign of diabetes or vitamin B12 deficiency.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Plantar nerves, Tibial nerve, Common peroneal nerve
- Common causes
- Diabetic neuropathy; Vitamin B12 deficiency; Morton's neuroma; Tarsal tunnel syndrome; Tight footwear; Alcohol and certain medicines
- Seek urgent care if
- Numb feet with any wound or colour change; Rapidly spreading numbness
Whole Body & General
When sensations move around the body, affect both sides, or come with anxiety, fatigue or poor sleep, the cause is usually system-wide (nutritional, metabolic, hormonal, immune or nervous-system sensitivity) rather than one pinched nerve.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Brain, Spinal cord, Vagus nerve, Brachial plexus, Sciatic nerve
- Common causes
- Anxiety and hyperventilation; Vitamin B12, B6 or folate problems; Diabetes and pre-diabetes; Thyroid disease; Fibromyalgia; Multiple sclerosis; Medication side effects
- Seek urgent care if
- Rapidly progressing weakness in both legs (Guillain-Barré syndrome); One-sided symptoms of sudden onset
Back of Head
The back of the head is supplied by the greater and lesser occipital nerves from C2 to C3. Tightness in the neck muscles they pass through can cause shooting, burning or tingling scalp pain.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Cervical plexus, Brain
- Common causes
- Occipital neuralgia; Tension headache; Neck arthritis; Hypnic sensations on falling asleep
- Seek urgent care if
- Sudden "thunderclap" headache at the back of the head
Upper Back
Upper back skin is supplied by the dorsal rami of the thoracic nerves. A burning or itchy patch by the shoulder blade is a classic sign of notalgia paresthetica; a band wrapping round to the front suggests an intercostal nerve.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Dorsal rami, Intercostal nerves, Spinal cord
- Common causes
- Muscle strain and posture; Notalgia paresthetica; Thoracic disc problems; Shingles
- Seek urgent care if
- Upper back pain with chest pain or breathlessness; Pain with fever or weight loss

Lower back burning can be local (muscles, facet joints, dorsal rami) or the start of a nerve root problem that travels into the leg.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Cauda equina, Dorsal rami, Sciatic nerve
- Common causes
- Disc herniation; Facet joint arthritis; Muscle strain; Spinal stenosis
- Seek urgent care if
- Saddle numbness, bladder or bowel change: emergency; Back pain with fever or a history of cancer
Buttocks & Hips
The sciatic nerve passes under the piriformis muscle deep in the buttock. Sitting pressure here causes pins and needles that pass once you stand; constant buttock burning suggests a nerve root or piriformis problem.
Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Sciatic nerve, Pudendal nerve
- Common causes
- Prolonged sitting; Piriformis syndrome; Trochanteric bursitis (outer hip); Sacroiliac joint problems
- Seek urgent care if
- Buttock pain with leg weakness; Saddle numbness
Calves

Nerves, causes and warning signs
- Nerves
- Tibial nerve, Sciatic nerve
- Common causes
- Restless legs syndrome; S1 radiculopathy; Neuropathy; Muscle cramps
- Seek urgent care if
- One swollen, hot, tender calf: possible deep vein thrombosis

- Common causes
- Diabetic neuropathy; Tarsal tunnel syndrome; B12 deficiency; Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Seek urgent care if
- Numb soles with a wound
Breast
Breast skin is supplied by the 2nd to 6th intercostal nerves in bands, with the supraclavicular nerves above. Burning or shooting pain following one band suggests a nerve; pain linked to the cycle is usually hormonal.

- Nerves
- Intercostal nerves, Brachial plexus
- Common causes
- Cyclical hormonal breast pain; Intercostal neuralgia or shingles; After breast surgery (intercostobrachial nerve); Costochondritis; Tight or underwired bras
- Seek urgent care if
- A new lump, nipple discharge or skin dimpling; Chest pressure with breathlessness or sweating: call emergency services
Nerve symptoms in women
The nerves are the same in women and men, but hormones, pregnancy and anatomy make some nerve problems far more common in women. Switch the 3D map to Female to see the female body with pelvic organs.
Vulvodynia or vulval nerve pain
Burning, stinging or rawness of the vulva for three months or more, with normal looking skin and no infection, is called vulvodynia. Sensitised branches of the pudendal nerve are part of the picture.
Breast or chest wall nerve pain
Burning in the breast or inner upper arm after breast surgery often comes from the intercostobrachial nerve. Without surgery, a band following a rib suggests an intercostal nerve or early shingles. Breast lumps and skin changes always need checking separately.
Where women are affected more often
- Pelvis & Urinary
- In women, burning with urination is most often a bladder infection. Persistent burning of the vulva with normal tests may be vulvodynia or pudendal neuralgia, both linked to sensitised pudendal nerve branches.
- Hands & Fingers
- Carpal tunnel is about three times more common in women and often starts in pregnancy, when fluid builds up in the wrist. It usually settles within months of birth.
- Thighs & Upper Legs
- Meralgia paresthetica (burning outer thigh) is common in late pregnancy as the belly stretches the nerve at the front of the hip.
- Face, Mouth & Jaw
- Burning mouth syndrome is most common in women after menopause.
- Lower Legs
- Restless legs syndrome affects up to one in five women in late pregnancy and usually fades after birth.

About the female model: the internal anatomy is adapted to a female body shape, with female pelvic organs added. It is an educational approximation, not a scan of one person.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main types of body sensations?
The main abnormal body sensations are tingling, pins and needles, numbness, burning, electric shocks, nerve itch, heaviness and hot or cold patches. Less common ones include crawling skin (formication), internal vibration, a tight band around the trunk, wet or trickling feelings, Lhermitte sign and brain zaps. Each points to different nerve fibres and different causes.
How do I know which nerve is causing my tingling?
Look at the exact pattern. Thumb to ring finger on the palm side points to the median nerve; the little finger to the ulnar nerve; a stripe down the arm or leg to a nerve root in the neck or back; both feet evenly to a whole-body neuropathy; one entire side of the body to the brain, which is an emergency if it starts suddenly. The nerve symptom checker maps this for you.
What is the difference between paresthesia and dysesthesia?
Paresthesia is an abnormal sensation that is not painful, such as tingling or pins and needles. Dysesthesia is an abnormal sensation that is unpleasant or painful, such as burning, rawness or electric shocks. Both come from irritated or damaged nerves, and many people have a mix of the two.
What is a dermatome?
A dermatome is the strip of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve root. C6 covers the thumb, C8 the little finger, T4 the nipple line, T10 the belly button, L5 the top of the foot and S1 the sole. Symptoms that follow one dermatome usually mean a pinched nerve root in the spine, or shingles.
Why does tingling get worse at night?
At night, wrists and elbows often stay bent for hours, which raises pressure in the carpal and cubital tunnels. Fluid also shifts into the hands when lying down. In neuropathy, fewer distractions make burning feet more noticeable, and restless legs syndrome follows a daily rhythm that peaks in the evening.
When is numbness or tingling an emergency?
Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg on one side, trouble speaking, numbness between the legs with new bladder or bowel problems, weakness climbing both legs over hours or days, tingling with chest pressure, sweating and breathlessness, sudden loss of vision or confusion, or an arm or leg that turns cold, pale and numb.
Can anxiety cause tingling and numbness?
Yes. Anxiety and fast breathing lower carbon dioxide in the blood, which changes how nerves fire. This typically causes tingling around the mouth and in both hands for a few minutes during an episode. Symptoms that are one sided, constant or last days are not typical of anxiety and should be checked.
Are nerve symptoms different in women?
The nerves are the same, but some conditions are more common in women: carpal tunnel (about three times more common, often in pregnancy), meralgia paresthetica in late pregnancy, burning mouth syndrome after menopause, restless legs in pregnancy, vulvodynia and multiple sclerosis, which affects women two to three times more often.
What tests show which nerve is damaged?
A doctor starts with a sensory map and reflexes. A nerve conduction study measures how fast and strongly signals travel along a nerve, and electromyography checks the muscles it supplies. MRI shows discs and nerve roots in the spine, and blood tests look for diabetes, B12 deficiency and thyroid problems.
Is this body map a diagnosis?
No. The map and symptom checker show which nerve most often produces a pattern like yours so you can have a better conversation with your doctor. Only an examination and, where needed, tests can diagnose the cause. Use it to learn, then see a professional for new, spreading or persistent symptoms.
